Richard Commisso

Hi I'm Richard and I drive a White Mazda 2 Sedan,

I have been teaching manual driving for over 9 years and have loved helping many learners build the confidence and skills to drive safely.

I am known for being patient, calm, and easy to learn with, and I enjoy seeing my students grow into confident, capable drivers.

My goal is to create a relaxed and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable, gain confidence, and develop safe driving habits for life.

I have taught many people with different backgrounds, including learners on the spectrum and those who may speak English as a second language.

He understands that everyone learns differently and adapts his teaching style to suit each individual learner.

Gear Changing Made Easy

Smooth gear changing is one of the main skills you need when learning to drive a manual car, along with steering and clutch control.

Changing Up and Down Gears

Changing up means moving to a higher gear as the car goes faster.

Example: 1st → 2nd → 3rd

Changing down means moving to a lower gear when the car slows down or needs more power.

Example: 4th → 3rd → 2nd

Simple Rule

Higher speed = higher gear

Slower speed or more power needed = lower gear

For example:

Change down when going up a hill

Change down when slowing for a corner

Change up when speeding up on a straight road

What Each Gear Does

1st gear = strongest power, lowest speed

5th gear = least power, highest speed

Approximate Gear Change Speeds

Changing Up

Gear Change

Approx Speed

1st → 2nd

25 km/h

2nd → 3rd

40 km/h

3rd → 4th

60 km/h

4th → 5th

80 km/h

Important Rule

“Brakes to slow — gears to go”

Use the brake to slow the car down.

Only change to a lower gear when you need power again to keep driving smoothly.

Selective Gear Changing

Sometimes you can skip gears.

Examples:

5th straight to 3rd when slowing quickly

when accelerating up to cruising speed change all gears

This is called selective or block gear changing.

The Palming Method

The gear stick naturally sits in the middle when in neutral.

1st Gear

Palm facing away from you

Move gear stick left and forward

2nd Gear

Keep light pressure left

Move straight back

3rd Gear

Palm facing toward you

Let the stick return to the middle

Push forward

4th Gear

From 3rd, pull straight back

5th Gear

Push right and forward

Easy Steps for Changing Gear

Check it is safe to change gears

(not during sharp corners or turns)

Take your foot off the accelerator

Push the clutch all the way down

Move the gear stick into the new gear

Slowly release the clutch

Gently press the accelerator again

Try not to look at the gear stick — keep your eyes on the road ahead.

The smoother you match the clutch and accelerator together, the smoother the gear change will feel.

Quotes

We can't recommend Richard enough! He has taught all 3 of our children to drive and they are now all very confident on the road. He is incredibly patient and calm and a fantastic teacher. I'm sure there were moments he was screaming on the inside but the kids would never know it! He always remained calm, encouraging and reassuring at all stages, from the first lesson to the last. Richard made learning to drive a positive experience for all 3 of our kids. We are so grateful for everything he has done and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for a fantastic driving instructor.
